Re: AS2 standard
If you need something now, take a look at:
http://www.mec-as2.org/
It is open source and free, although not Drummond certified.
We are running it on a Windows machine with mapped drives to our i5.
Our i5 puts files on the IFS and the AS2 machine picks them up and
delivers them and for inbound AS2, the Windows machine drops data off
to the i5 mapped drive where our EDI application (running on the i5)
picks up the files and processes them.
Hope that helps a little bit.

Re: AS2 standard
Hi Scott,
in Europe we have a lot af small and medium size business that dosn't
require
certification - but only want's to shift from FTP and/or Mailbased
more or
less properitare
communication to HTTP AS2 standard based communication.
These companies will communicate between each other directly - and if
they
want or need
to make their AS2 communication "certified" they just reroute their
AS2
communication through
a service provider with Drummon certified software for these business
partners and here the
service provider most likely already will be a trusted partner to
these
big business partners.
Here is an example:
http://www.gxs.com/products/global_messaging/AS2_products.htm
I have been talking to a danish service providor - and they have no
problem in connecting
to an iSeries (actually they use iSeries themselve´s).
I see the AS2 solution as three different tings:
1. HTTPS configuration with certificates - that's an iSeries os/5
issue
2. HTTP AS2 mime communication - thats a HTTPapi issue (must be very
like
a web-service)
3. The actual EDI content - thats' a normal application issue
So in my opinion HTTPapi with AS2 capabilities would not be wasted
work
but indeed a
usefull feature.

Henrik

Re: AS2 standard
I started looking into AS2 a while back. The reason it appealed to me
is that EDI vendors are charging large sums (from US $7000 - US
$20000)
just to add an HTTP (AS2) module to their EDI software. That seems
absurd, especially since I'm the author of an existing open source
HTTP
tool.
There's an open standard for AS2 maintained by the IETF (just like
other
Internet standards):
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4130.txt
But there's a big problem! The open standards tell you what needs to
be
done, and they say that anyone can do it -- but all of the people who
require AS2 (including 1SYNC, WalMart, etc) *require* you to be
certified with the Drummond Group. And Drummond charges more than USD
$80000 for certification, making it impractical for an open source.
Granted, according to the internet standards, the certification is not
manditory... but since all of the big players MAKE it manditory, it
doesn't matter. You get certified, or they don't do business with
you.
So I gave up on making my own AS2, even at $7000, it's cheaper to buy
than build.
