It seems that the very first executable statement,
   eval      pos = %scan('?': path) - 1
is what's blowing up. (Once again, MCH1210.)

I tried isolating the code into a separate test program, and it blows up 
there, too. In the test program, I tried making "pos" a "29P 0", and 
removing the VARYING, and shortening "path" to 255 (and removing the 
VARYING), and it still fails. Also fails if I send the test program to 
our V4R5 box.
